Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - May 2022
Welcome to the May 2022 newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation. We deeply appreciate every opportunity we get to introduce Arts for Good Foundation to new people. This month, we have been reflecting on collaboration and change-making.  We believe change-making should respect the current systems of various organisations involved in the process. As part of this belief, we are committed to adopting innovative problem solving approaches, pushing boundaries and trying new things in order to make small changes happen without disturbing the norms and routines of various organisations. We are eager to connect with teacher advocates in local schools and are also seeking the support of corporations and foundations to deliver our programmes to a wide range of potential beneficiaries.

Best regards,

School Art Week with Written On Wood Project
"Be Brave. Art means creating things that didn't exist". - Art Week 2022, Chinese International School (CIS)"

We were delighted to launch our Written On Wood Filmmaking Project as part of CIS Art Week. Filmmaking with students is a great project-based learning opportunity that is highly collaborative and requires different skillsets. In this project, we incorporated filmmaking with elements of Hong Kong's history, sociology, geography, ecology, arts and humanities to enrich learning potential for student participants. Students were highly engaged in this week-long,  hand-on learning experience.

At the beginning of the week we challenged three groups of students to produce three short films that would lead audiences on a journey of thoughts, feelings and emotions through three compelling stories.

The three groups of students were challenged to tell their stories from different perspectives - one each from historical, biographical, and environmental and ecological perspective. They were encouraged to  tell the stories by leveraging creative techniques such as illustration, animation, and voice-over. The students became deeply invested in their films and showed a high level of commitment to teamwork. We were impressed by their level of autonomy and how they took   control over their learning process, showing intrinsic motivation to make the best film possible within such a short period of time.

We are proud of the three films our student participants accomplished and are actively seeking support to produce a full-length documentary from the historical perspective by professionals. We aim for the final film to be a meaningful and child-friendly documentary that can help a wider cohort of Hong Kong students learn about the history and the changes of their homeland. We hope that the documentary will inspire more students to explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions about Hong Kong in a new way. (View the 7-Minute video trailer here).

We are excited to have recruited twenty-six art viewing study group facilitators from the University of Hong Kong for HKU x Arts For Good Leadership Programme. We are deeply grateful for the support of various NGOs and frontline social workers who are helping us identify and engage with potential programme participants.

This programme is an important part of how Arts for Good Foundation strives to make art accessible to all students in Hong Kong. We are delighted that this programme has progressed to engage this second group of facilitators.

Due to ongoing human resource  shortages and social distancing requirements, we decided to keep the second cohort small and to focus on the quality of training rather than the quantity of the facilitators. Facilitators receive training in small group facilitation skills and engage in self-directed study of the artworks at museums prior to their services.

All the facilitators will spend five Saturday mornings facilitating museum visits for upper primary and secondary students who lack the opportunity to view art. This equates to roughly twenty hours of volunteer service for each facilitator, but could potentially make a great difference for themselves and the young participants they introduce artworks to.

Extra-curricular Programme planning - After School Art Viewing

We are currently planning an After School Art Viewing extra-curricular programme for a school. We deeply appreciate all the supports we have received from exhibitors in Hong Kong in the planning process.

Through this programme, which will launch in September 2022, we aim to achieve the following intended learning outcomes:

1). Use storytelling to make art and culture relevant to the daily life and education of younger generations.

2).Instil a sense of inclusion and help students participants perceive Hong Kong and  the world through different perspectives.

3). Cultivate curiosity, foster moral imagination and seek understanding of the common humanity values at the core of our community.

Through collaborations with the art communities, this programme will provide students with experiential learning through art. We will focus in particular on  social resonance and inter-disciplinary exploration, empowering students  and encouraging personal growth for the betterment of  Hong Kong's future society.
