Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - March 2022
Welcome to the March 2022 newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation. During this difficult time in Hong Kong, we are reflecting on the value of solidarity for the way forward. I grew up in Mainland China in a collective culture that highly values solidarity. Recently, Sean Lynch's French interpretation of The Gift of Solidarity reminded me that our sense of solidarity entails having moral obligation to attend to the well-being of every person in [our] group. Driven by this value, we deeply believe that change making is a collaborative and collective process in Hong Kong.

Best regards,

Written On the Wood: A Story on a Piece of Leased Land - Chi Kee Sawmill and Timber Documentary Making

Continuing with our collaboration with artist Justin Hui,  we are currently developing the story structure for our documentary. This process is part of a documentary making course guided by Oscar-nominated film director Daniel Raim.

The story begins in the 1930s when China was undergoing dramatic social change amid civil war, and follows Wong Chi and his family’s life journey in Hong Kong to the present day in their Sawmill factory Chi Kee. The factory has gone through multiple waves of developments and changes as the sources and uses of wood changed in step with the history of Hong Kong. It's currently facing challenges (or opportunities) of future development in the Greater Bay Area.

The documentary project extends the implications of "wood" from its material perspectives to its social resonance by incorporating elements of history, geography, sociology, and humanity. It invokes deeper insights to the connection between wood and the narratives of Hong Kong and how the material connects our city with the rest of the world.

We welcome schools or universities to collaborate with us on this documentary. Opportunities to work together include Life-wide Learning (LWL), Other Learning Experience (OLE), Creative, Art, and Service (CAS), art weeks and art initiatives, internships, or service-learning etc. We  invite creative young talents to join the research process for the documentary, to help us shoot footages, or to apply their animation or illustration skills to help develop the storyboard and scenes. We also invite young professionals in creative media who are interested in educational documentary making to join us as volunteers, interns, collaborators or advisors.

Volunteer Appreciation, and New Swire Trust Go-Givers Rewards

We are deeply thankful for all the skill-based volunteer supports. Thank you Time Auction, which has supported us with over 130 volunteer hours on 10 projects in 2021. We also deeply appreciate the support of about 60 dedicated volunteers and supporting artists who have worked with us from other channels. Thank you for your countless contributions to various facets of our works.

We are delighted to announce that from now till the end of 2022, we will be part of Swire Trust Go-Givers Program being delivered through Time Auction. Volunteers who register through Time Auction and contribute their time will be able to redeem their time to enjoy educational and experiential rewards donated by Swire Trust.

We hope these generous rewards will attract more creative talents and skill-based volunteers to help us in 2022. Together we can contribute to positive changes in our future society!

Welcome Our New Advisor

The programmes delivered by Arts for Good Foundation are based on our deep belief in Arts As Civic Common by Project Zero of Harvard Graduate School of Education. We are delighted to welcome our new Adviser Elizabeth Kim who graduated from the above institution, and currently is a Research Scientist at the National Institute of Education, Singapore.

Her research focuses on social-emotional development in children. She also explores the role of arts and culture in learning and the role of creative spaces for children in museums. We are deeply thankful for her support and looking forward to learning from her.

Friends and Partners of Arts for Good Foundation

We were delighted to contribute to the discussions with representatives from the social impact sector at the recent virtual events hosted by Dream Impact on Gather.town and Discord platforms. Looking ahead to April, we will also be delivering workshops and speeches under virtual settings on topics including Art as Soft Powers, and Arts for Good and The Role of A Change Maker in Our Society to youths in Hong Kong.

These new platforms provided by our friends and partners enable us to continue to advocate for the social power of art. This includes sharing our belief that art should not only be associated with therapy (which is more of an individualistic concept), but should also serve as a social medium to build communities and to explore shared human values. We believe this is particularly important at a time when Hong Kong is changing quickly and individuals and communities face numerous challenges.

We would like to expand our network to connect with more friends and partners, particularly those who specialise in technology, innovation and creative media. Please email us to explore collaborative opportunities that integrate arts, education, and technology for social impacts.
