November Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation
Welcome to the November 2021 newsletter from Arts For Good Foundation. This month, we successfully recruited 32 Art Advocates from The University of Hong Kong and trained them to serve our communities and explore deep meanings through art viewing and art making.  At the same time,  we are grateful to have received support from pioneer Blockchain company UD who offered an added value for our students' learning about how art and technology intersect and create impact in the crypto world.

Art Viewing Facilitator Training- HKMOA and M+

We are delighted to welcome a group of enthuiastic art viewing facilitators who will facilitate museum study groups at HKMOA and M+ respectively.  15 of them will lead at HKMOA and 20 at M+ museum from December 2021 to February 2022.

At the pre-service trainings, we trained our facilitators to prepare stories of their selected artworks and artists through direct learning. The object was to help them seek stories that reflect their unique way of exploring deeper values in our community, tell stories with real life relevancy and share with others who come from different social backgrounds.

We encouraged students to connect art viewing with their multidisciplinary knowledge and expertises while also urging them to be accepting and to appreciate other points of view when seeking different interpretations from the participants. The training also helped enhance  their visual literacy and high-order visual thinking skills, which they could apply to help others .

Arts for Good Foundation believes deeply in the ASK (i.e. Attitude, Skills, and Knowledge) learning model. During the pre-service training, we encouraged student to build their knowledge through their independent studies, to enhance their storytelling skills to maximise their impact on our community. We are grateful for our advisor and Education Psychologist Michael Su from HKU for delivering a talk about "Attitude" in Education through facilitation. Michael explained how attitude of our facilitators could have a long-term impact on programme participants.

We look forward to welcoming the student study groups that will be led in art exploration journeys by our trained facilitators in the coming months.

Community Service through Arts and Crafts at Hope of the City

Whist the Christmas season is a jolly time for most families, it is often a difficult time for single mothers facing financial constraints. Arts for Good Foundation has partnered with Hong Kong Momtrepreneurs and Hope of the City to deliver a five-day Christmas Camp for 20 single mothers and their children in Sham Shui Po.

Our eight art facilitators  (five from HKU, three from CIS and GSIS) have prepared a five-day art and craft camp that will engage the children in activities such as mandala making, Chinese painting, music performance and more. While the children are participating in art camp, their mothers will attend a five-day empowerment program delivered by corporate professionals and organised by  Hong Kong Momtrepreneurs

A big thank you to the partners and student supporters who have come together to share compassion, kindness and care with members of the Hong Kong community who face hardship.

Community Engagement Art Making at The Mills

Arts for Good Foundation strives to make a series of Community Engagement Arts that reflect the future society in Hong Kong.  These works represent our intertwining relationships the young participants have with our community. By fully engaging in art making pursuits, participants will explore  individual and collective aspects of the future society in Hong Kong.  The creative process emphasised solidarity, respect, and collaboration among the participants. The goal was to  give the students opportunities to develop mutual respect and reenforce ethical minds, while also learning how to  express themselves individually and collectively.

Also at The Mills in December, we are excited to launch the "Journey of Reflection 2021" with Mexican Artist Ane Alfeiran and local Ink Performance Artist InkWanders.

We deeply appreciate the continued venue sponsorship from The Mills, and are excited about upcoming art making events that will incorporate a variety of mediums that include nails on big frames, threads, paint, embroidery on canvas, installations, as well as ink performance art.

NFT Support from UD

Recently we have been invited by UD (the pioneer blockchain solutions providers in Hong Kong) to launch their "The Art of Future" campaign, which aims to provide new perspectives in the way youths see art and techonology.

We are thankful for the opportunity of developing our students' works to NFT.  With this opportunity, we aim to  inspire youngsters to think about what technology and art could intersect and create impact in crypto world; to promote diversified & inclusive community through art creation on a new digital platform; and to raise awareness of a potential new way of reflecting, making and viewing arts for social good.

The Power of Imagination with Surrealism

We had a wonderful sharing session with Bloom KKCA Academy at Dream Impact.  We are grateful for the teachers' support in helping students learn about social innovation as a new way to foster their social consciousness. By talking about power of imagination and how it is expressed in surrealism, we successfully made the concept of "surrealism" relevant to them, and helped them better understand surrealist artworks by imagining other people’s lives. More importantly, we urged them to imagine life in a different world at a difficult moment in time. The discussions and the images sparked their curiosity while the opportunities to draw in the surrealist style engaged them creatively.
