Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - September 2022
Welcome to the September 2022 newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I had the honour of being selected as one of the Arts for Good Fellows by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) as part of their celebration of 30 years of making a better world. The Arts For Good fellowship gathers professionals from the arts and social sectors in Asia to collaborate and foster a community of practice that harnesses the power of arts and culture to create positive social change. I am looking forward to the learning opportunities in the next four months as international artists, art practitioners, and programmers from social sectors connect and exchange our experience, practices, and vision while learning and collaborating in the community.

Best regards,

Internship for the Department of Asian & Policy Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and Asia Pacific Youth Development Foundation

We are delighted to offer 15 internship opportunities for students from the Department of Asian and Policy Studies (APS) of EdUHK and the D Generation Community Innovator Scheme of the Asia Pacific Youth Development Foundation (APYDF). Each APS Intern is required to work for at least 150 hours while each student of APYDF is required to work for a minimum of 80 hours during their respective internship periods.

We are encouraged by these opportunties to design new art projects with a focus on social innovation and community connection that will enrich their learning experience. More importantly, we aim to broaden their perspectives to Hong Kong and the world beyond, empower them to play a role in our social change initiatives, and hopefully to influence them with passion, and equip them with new skills and dedication to serve our wider communities in their future careers.

Chinese Calligraphy Education Project 2022

Thanks to the support from The Mills and Credit Suisse, we had another great learning session with 20 student beneficiaries from a local school in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong. We are also happy to announce that we will run the project again in October with a new group of beneficiaries and supporters .

We would also like to send our sincerest gratitude for the support and time contributed by the calligraphy and ink painting artist Katrina Mo, sound artist Alain Chui, as well as the young volunteers who created our video about Hong Kong Disappearing Signages Written in Chinese Calligraphy (ENG/CHI).

Their contribution enabled us to create a visual and auditory learning experience for students, and help them appreciate Chinese Calligraphy, the historical stories of different scripts in particular, as well as a facet of Hong Kong’s local history. More importantly, we aimed to help the students understand the perspectives of “Black” and “White”; and to enhance their emotional and intellectual connections to our wide communities in Hong Kong .

Debriefing of HKU x Arts For Good Art Viewing Study Groups at Museums

We are delighted to have held a debriefing session with HKU ambassadors who led a total of 30 art viewing study groups at M+ and HKMOA over the summer. This second pilot has reached over 76 beneficiaries from various NGO centres. This initiative is designed to make art viewing accessible to students (aged 9+) who might not have regular access to the arts. More importantly, we are creating co-learning experiences for the university ambassadors and the beneficiaries, and helping to broaden their perspectives and respect differences, and foster connection with the community through this self-directed learning experience.

We are actively seeking ticketing support in order to launch the third stage of this initiative next year when we will implement further improvement based on what we have learned from the previous two pilots.

Media Manipulation 2022 - Behind the Scene Video

We are grateful to present the Media Manipulation 2022 Behind the Scene video. We would like to thank Katrina Mo for writing the Chinese title of the short film in Chinese calligraphy.

Directed by Ya-Ya An, Media Manipulation 2022 was created by 12 young creative talents and targets to youth audiences.

The film was edited by Isabel Galwey and the sound designed by young sound designer Walter Li. Through this film, we hope to raise awareness of the potential impacts that the state of overflowing information imposes on our future generations. We also hope to advocate the importance of fostering diverse perspectives, and nurturing imagination, critical thinking and independent thinking through arts in our education system.

Community Sound Art Project

We are planning to launch a community sound art project with young collaborators. We are current seeking young sound seekers, sound creators, and sound designers to develop the project together.
