Arts for Good Foundation Newsletter - May 2024
Welcome to the May 2024 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I am extremely excited to share that Guangzhou-based artist Chen Jialu, who was part our “Daughters of Canton Delta” exhibition at The University of Chicago Hong Kong Campus has received a grant award from the Asian Cultural Council that will support her impactful research into self-combing women in South East Asia. I am extremely proud to have brought Chen to Hong Kong for her first exhibition in the city. As a curator and social impact professional, I remain dedicated to supporting young artists who uphold positive values in our society and continue to advocate diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging (DEIB) through and with the arts to support sustainable development in Hong Kong.

Also this month, I have also had the privilege of co-leading a service learning expedition alongside 26 students from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Our journey led us to serve a village primary school in Hui Zhou, Guangdong, followed by a visit to a well-known secondary school in Shenzhen and a few other education sites in the Guangdong area. This service learning expedition was featured on the Hong Kong Commercial Daily on 14th May 2024 (Link). During this trip, I am delighted to share ideas and exchange expertise with frontline educators and academic professionals and to learn more about the potential to integrate AI technology with Chinese culture in education. Arts for Good is growing to be a stronger education and social impact entity, fueled by a spirit of open-minded curiosity and a commitment to innovative and creative learning experiences. We are dedicated to creating integrated learning projects that leverage the power of arts for a lasting social impact in Hong Kong.

Story of Hong Kong: CityU CLASS Project

We are excited to announce the initiation of a student-centered storytelling project by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science (CLASS) in celebration of the 30th anniversary of City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The project has received additional support from a tech startup under CityU’s TECH 300 programme which will enhance our collaborative efforts. We will lead student groups from five departments, working collaboratively with college professors, CityU alumni and the tech startup, to integrate resonant narratives into an established tech platform with a goal of enhancing community engagement and impact. We aim to collaboratively craft 8-10 Stories of Hong Kong, utilising creative and artistic expressions that reflect the unique perspectives of the CLASS community within CityU. More importantly, this entire production process will provide a meaningful, integrated and creative learning experience for the student participants.

Since Arts for Good’s inception, we have been committed to exploring how technology could support the growth of Arts for Good to create enduring impact. This CLASS partnership excites us as we strive to develop a replicable collaboration business model that encapsulates the essence of our mission at Arts for Good. We invite CityU students to enrol to take part in this enriching summer journey.

Retelling The Cenotaph 2024

We are thrilled to announce the completion of three documentaries: Stars to Stones, Entrenched, and Timeless. Created in collaboration with 14 students from the Chinese International School in Hong Kong (CIS), the documentaries were screened to over 150 students at CIS.  We are delighted to received the feedbacks from the frontline teachers, one of who characterised the films as "tasteful, respectful, and creative treatments of the memorial".

Marking our third year of documentary filmmaking partnership with CIS, we take immense pride in the profound influence this creative endeavour has had on student participants and their broader community.

This unique educational journey integrates the art of documentary making with the rich tapestry of Hong Kong’s history. It’s a comprehensive process that engages students in research, ideation, planning, filming, post-production, and screening. It demands a high degree of communication skills, information processing, perspective-taking, and, crucially, the ability to synthesise learnings and observations into a compelling visual and auditory narrative with a unique viewpoint.

Above all, this process enlightens youth about the situated knowledge that is often overlooked; encourages them to engage with their surroundings with inquisitive mind; and fosters the comprehensive skills necessary to craft a complete and compelling story. This kind of learning experience not only produce artworks that resonate with wider communities but also inspire students to explore and affirm their shared cultural identity, which is the purpose of our work and the ultimate impact that Arts for Good aims to achieve in Hong Kong's wider education landscape.

Arts for Good Foundation 2024
歡迎閱覽Arts for Good Foundation五月份的通訊。
