Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - August 2023
Welcome to the August 2023 newsletter from the Arts for Good Foundation. As the summer comes to an end, I would like to express my gratitude for the media coverages that we have received and will continue to receive. I invite our audiences to read my recent feature in the South China Morning Post's Post Magazine as well as a feature of our new Director, Katrina Mo, in HK01.

Arts for Good Foundation is a social enterprise, not a charity. We registered as a Limited by Guarantee entity and have been endorsed with the "Social Enterprise Tree Mark" by the Home Affairs Department of HKSAR. We are committed to being a truly trilingual (English, Cantonese, and Mandarin) entity and, with support from communities and collaboration with institutions, we strive to tell stories of Hong Kong in a way that are relevant to young people in Hong Kong, regardless of their social, economic, or any other demographic backgrounds.

Best regards,
Change Maker,
Founder & Director

Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) with Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)

One of our pipeline projects is to engage young people to advocate for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Hong Kong. By encouraging creative reinterpretations of ICH, we help students explore and understand their cultural roots by appreciating our traditions and history. This allows them to retell our shared past, connect it with our present, and explore various creative possibilities for social impact.

We are delighted to have our first group of students from HKBU advocating for one of the ICH items - the milk tea making technique - through a family story in the form of Visual Novel (VN). This learning experience was co-created with The Language Center of HKBU and aims to explore the history and context of milk tea making, engage students in digital storytelling in an authentic manner, and raise awareness among young people about Hong Kong-style milk tea making as an ICH item.

Our goal is to continue working with students in higher education, collaborating with them to make community impact even after they complete their own learning experience. With continuous support in research and knowledge from higher education institutions, we hope to engage more student groups in different creative projects, learning and advocating for more ICH items (there are total of 480 in the inventory). This kind of support and collaboration will also enable us to curate a wider range of creative and cross-disciplinary learning experiences for our target younger students in schools and NGOs in Hong Kong.

Social Impact Academy Webinar with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

We are honoured that our Founder, Amanda Sun, was able to deliver her first public speech within the CUHK community on 22nd August. We would like to express our gratitude to The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) at CUHK, the Hong Kong Chapter of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Hong Kong), and the CUHK Social Responsibility and Sustainability for their support. Our newsletter audiences are invited to access to the webinar content via the PPT presentation.

We are delighted to have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the CUHK community regarding our work, which has been described as "multidimensional approach of transforming individuals and inspiring connections across differences." We are dedicated to continue to fostering deep relationships with CUHK, with a specific focus on social impact, sustainability, creativity and the arts. We also hope to identify opportunities to collaborate and leverage the power of the arts to achieve our  shared sustainable development goals in Hong Kong.

Art Viewing App Development

With the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission's STEM Internship Scheme, we are thrilled to welcome two interns from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Hong Kong Education University (HKEU) this month. The students have been working with us to develop a demo for an Art Viewing App called ARtplay Stickers. This app's concept was proposed by Larissa Tsoi Ying Ching, a student from the Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). The app aims to engage younger generations in art viewing and to foster connections between art viewing and their daily lives in the communities.

Arts for Good Foundation is fully committed to engage and guide young people in every stage of our social impact projects. We believe that by having them experience the process of creating beautiful works for social needs, we can inspire system thinkers, change makers, and art and culture learners and advocates. Our aim is to engender a sense of purpose and meaning and instil them with positive feelings as they embark on their academic and professional journeys, supporting and contributing to a diverse and inclusive society through and with the arts in Hong Kong.
