Better with Hong Kong #1 - Kwun Tong 2024
etching on copper panel
made in China Academy of Art, Hangzhou China
|
Welcome to the October 2024 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, we are proud to make a series of etching artworks on copper panels titled "Better With Hong Kong" at the Department of Printmaking, China Academy of Art, in collaboration with young artists and photographers from diverse cultural backgrounds including Hong Kong, Pakistan, and Mainland China. The four artworks in this collection are: "Better With Hong Kong #1 - Kwun Tong", "Better with Hong Kong #2 - Walking in the Rain", "Better with Hong Kong #3 - The King Within a Concrete Jungle", and Better with Hong Kong #4 - Kowloon East from Lion Rock.
Printmaking is inherently symbolic. The initial recognition of symbols by humans marks the genesis of our consciousness. A profound spiritual connection is forged in places where we acknowledge and engage with these symbols. Printmaking serves to rejuvenate these symbol-rich images, facilitating new dialogues within and across cultures. In these four etching artworks, we have creatively reimagined the picturesque street and landscape scenes of Kwun Tong and Kowloon East, along with the iconic Lion Rock, as fresh symbols embodying Hong Kong with new and novel perspectives. These representations are enriched with unique textures and palettes through etching process on copper panels.
Best regards,

Better with Hong Kong - Until Each One of Us Belongs
We are excited to announce the opening of the exhibition "Better with Hong Kong - Until Each One of Us Belongs" at the Manulife Hong Kong & Macau headquarter office in Hong Kong. The exhibition features the first three etching artworks from our Better With Hong Kong series displayed at the 22nd Floor of Manulife Financial Center in Kwun Tong.
We are also grateful for the opportunity to showcase artworks by two talented textile artists, Begha Nanda Kumari and Katrina Leigh M. Raimann. Through their creations, they share narratives that explore how their shared textile heritage from Nepal and the Philippines enables them to express their connections and sentiments towards their adopted home in Hong Kong. Additionally, we extend our deep gratitude for the ten photography artworks contributed by three photographers, Colin Lau, Lau Wing Hong (HongPICs康港劉影), and Mohammad Tahir Oscar, as well as two miniature artworks by the miniature artist On Tai. Their pieces vividly capture the diverse heritages and cultures of Hong Kong, encompassing themes such as the fishman culture, street canopy, public housing, calligraphy preservation, Hakka village traditions and traditional festivals.
We anticipate that the exhibition and its underlying messages will encourage the Manulife community to embrace cultural diversity as a fundamental aspect of their daily reflection. Through our endeavours with artists and the creative process, we have foster another significant visual dialogue on our ongoing advocacy for the power of arts within the realm of DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) in Hong Kong.

CLASS-room for
CityUHK 30th Anniversary
We are thrilled to present the first story of the CityU Hero series at CityUHK's 30th Anniversary Signature Event: "CityUHK as a Sino-Foreign Cultural Exchange Hub". This special event features Professor Cheng Pei Kai, renowned as a Professor of Chinese Culture, the Founding Director of the Former Chinese Civilisation Centre CityUHK, the Former President of the Chinese Culture Institute, the Former Chairman of the Hong Kong SAR Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, and the Chairman of the China Folk Literature and Art Association (HK Branch).
Moreover, we are excited to announce the upcoming release of a documentary on youth mental health in Hong Kong titled "Beneath the Sun, Once Again". At the upcoming 30th Anniversary of the CityUHK Homecoming Event, CityUHK will showcase four video stories about the emerging Cantonese Opera star Leung Fei Tong, Head of Entrepreneurship at Cyberport Alice So, and community leader and Sham Shui Po District Councillor Jeff Leung. Through these narratives and the visual production process, we have been guiding groups of youths from CLASS to explore diverse perspectives shared by dedicated frontline professionals who are actively shaping Hong Kong's future with a vision of progress and a transformative mindset.
By leveraging social media channels and two upcoming virtual platforms, our aim is to inspire more young individuals to engage with the passion and dedication of these individuals. We encourage them to persist in their pursuit of both professional and personal development with positivity, hope, and a strong commitment to contributing to our community and betterment of our society.

歡迎閱覽Arts for Good Foundation 本年度10 月份的通訊。
