City Script: Calligraphy in Light and Sound
Calligraphy Education Project
The Calligraphy Education Project that we developed in 2022 in collaboration with higher education students, volunteers from professional fields, and young artists, continues to create meaningful social impact. With a renewed approach, we are bringing the project to life for The Hong Kong Family Welfare Society Women and Family Enhancement Centre, benefiting eight pairs of primary school students and their silver-age partners, in support of HKFWS's mission to promote cross-generational connection and inclusivity.
Through this new storytelling perspective, we beautifully situate Chinese calligraphy within the context of Hong Kong’s own signage calligraphy. This explores its history and transformation to reawaken the sentimental memories of silver-age participants. We look to inspire primary-age students to appreciate the unique beauty of Chinese calligraphy, which artificial intelligence and machine-printed characters simply cannot replicate.
By experiencing a calligraphy learning process within civic life experiences such as tram rides, fresh markets, tea houses, and pawnshops, we encourage all learners to:
1). broaden their understanding of Chinese calligraphy's deep relevance to everyday civic life;
2). strengthen their connection to calligraphy alongside family members of different generations;
3). gain inspiring insights into the evolution of Hong Kong’s unique calligraphy font; and
4). foster an appreciation for the calligraphy's distinctive black-and-white aesthetics, celebrating its power to reveal personality, style, and interpretative richness.
