Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - April 2023
Welcome to the April 2023 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, we are proud of the meaningful projects we have completed with our collaborators, all of which have received great feedbacks. We will continue to develop engaging projects and build deeper trusting relationships with our stakeholders to benefit more students, particularly those from the underprivileged communities. In the process, we continue to provide opportunities to help them become great storytellers, develop system thinking skills, evolve as global citizens and emerge as lifelong cultural learners and advocates for stronger communities in Hong Kong.

Best regards,
Change Maker,
Founder & Director

Seeking HONG KONG Memories through Indian Folk Arts at The Mills

Thanks to our collaborating artist Shweta Rastogi, we had the pleasure of spending two creative days with 19 beneficiaries from two NGOs: the Chatteris Educational Foundation and Be The Change.

We took the youths on a creative journey to discover Hong Kong Memories through various Indian folk arts. This project offers an arts-integrated learning experience that combines local history, humanity stories and language learning for youths in Hong Kong.

Folk art tells stories that inspire us to be humble and grounded. This project uniquely blends heritage appreciation, storytelling, and various Indian folk arts to produce a unique cross-cultural learning opportunity for Hong Kong youths. It aims to inspire participants to foster diverse artistic, historical, and cultural perspectives on Hong Kong, while also encouraging them to bring their unique selves to discover and create new possibilities.

We are grateful for the contributions of four corporate volunteers from Credit Suisse, support of Corporate Citizenship and Foundations APAC and The Mills, inputs from six university student volunteers, and the support of a private funder. We all together made possible the meaningful two-day experience for beneficiaries. We were deeply motivated by the positive feedback from stakeholders and will continue to curate more meaningful art and culture experiences to deepen and widen our impact.

Art In MTR Walk With Andrew Mead

We are honoured to have Head of Architecture at MTR, Andrew Mead, lead 10 students from our video-making project on an Art in MTR walk. Through this walk, participating youths drew inspiration from viewing art in a civic landscape, experiencing first hand how creativity brings new meaning to our daily lives and fosters deeper connections to our local communities. We further enhanced the experience by sharing the stories behind the art installations and exploring the change making processes that went into delivering the projects.

We are also delighted to have completed five videos in different genres reflecting the environs and local cultures of five of the stations and the surrounding neighbourhoods. We are committed to continuing bring stories like these alive with professional support for participants' creative visions and processes.

Featured Artist Series #2:
Gina Maldonado
#Video supported and produced by Under Production Limited.

With the recent blooming of spider tree flowers along the roadsides and parks in Hong Kong, we are delighted to introduce the second artist of our Featured Artist Series: Gina Maldonado (Link).

Gina Maldonado dedicates her art to celebrate her love of nature in her daily life in Wong Tai Sin, under Lion Rock Mountain, where she lives. She has developed a profound connection with nature during her 11 years in Hong Kong.

We believe that nature is a great asset for the future, as it deeply connects us to the environment, architecture, and diverse heritage and culture in Hong Kong. We hope that our future work with Gina will help promote the beauty of nature and foster a deeper emotional connection to the neighbourhoods and communities of Hong Kong. By developing new perspectives and building sentimental attachments to different neighbourhoods around the city, we could then inspire positive changes for Hong Kong.

"Story of Hong Kong" Series: Body Diversity and Inclusion

We are delighted to continue our Story of Hong Kong Series with a documentary about Christy Cheung. Made possible through our collaboration with the HKU-Guild and the HKU-MACC, the documentary shares how Christy survived and thrived after battling breast cancer at the age of 33. She has since committed herself to exploring new meanings for the idea of a perfect body through Pherfect Creative Foundation, her newly-founded charity. By supporting her, we hope to raise awareness of body diversity and inclusion, particularly for those who have undergone dramatic changes due to various life experiences.

In addition, we are excited to work with eight Year 11 students from the Chinese International School (CIS) in May to create a second documentary about Rabi Yim, which will be showcased to all Y10 and Y11 students at CIS. The documentary will showcase how Rabi has thrived in her life in a wheelchair in Hong Kong after losing her two legs when she moved from Paris to Hong Kong.

The aim of these two documentaries is to educate participating youths about how to approach life positively and help them learn new perspectives on how to engage with adversity. Furthermore, they aim to focus on those in Hong Kong with different physical conditions, sharing new perspectives and challenging the homogenising images of "perfection" that is often portrayed via social media. Through the documentary-making process, we also aim to cultivate ethical and respectful mindsets towards people with various body conditions and to inspire the creators and viewers to live a beautiful and meaningful lives filled with positivity and energy.

Additionally, we hope to host fireside chats and documentary screenings for primary and secondary school students in schools and NGOs. Our goal is to inspire the younger generations to embrace their true selves and explore new possibilities.
