Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - January 2023
Welcome to the January 2023 newsletter of Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I am humbled to join The Arts for Good (A4G) Fellowship (Singapore Chapter) organised by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF). The annual fellowship aims to grow the Arts for Good ecosystem by fostering a community of practice that harnesses the power of the arts and culture to create positive social change for a better world. It was an honour to  be welcomed by and engage in an insightful sharing with the Minister of State, Singapore, Ms Low Yen Ling (Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth & Ministry of Trade and Industry) at Bukit Gombak Park, Singapore. (Post Link)

The fellowship was an inspiring and encouraging opportunity for peer learning and sharing. Above all, it enables cross-cultural partnerships for social change and lays the foundations for further meaningful collaboration. This experience further strengthened my resolve and commitment to seek future opportunities for collaboration and engagement in Hong Kong and across the region with the goal of harnessing the power of arts for a more sustainable and inclusive society for Hong Kong.

Best regards,

The New Theory of Change Launched

We are delighted to launch an updated version of the Theory of Change (Link) for the Arts for Good Foundation. The chart outlines our roadmap and the ultimate goal that we are striving to achieve in Hong Kong. We deeply appreciate support from the Global Launchpad programme at the University of Chicago, teaching and learning professionals and education psychologists from the University of Hong Kong, Arts for Good Fellows of SIF, as well as graphic making volunteers in the development of this framework. The new framework identifies the resources that we are seeking, the programmes that we provide, our path to achieving intermediate and long-term outcomes, the key stakeholders, as well as the ultimate beneficiaries on our journey.

#Assumptions of the Theory of Change will be updated on the website of the Arts for Good Foundation

Arts for Good Foundation Granted the "SE Tree Mark" by The Home Affairs Department, the HKSAR Goverment

The “SE Tree Mark” was recently launched by The Home Affairs Department, the HKSAR Government. The logo helps the general public identify Social Enterprises (SEs) in Hong Kong which are aligned with the Government’s policy and philosophy for development of SEs. The SEs endorsed by the Home Affairs Department will be able to display the specially designed “SE Tree Mark” Logo, thereby encouraging the public to patronise and support them.

We are pleased to have been granted the logo given our strong belief that changes through and with arts are urgently needed in our education and social system. Such changes can sustainably contribute to Hong Kong as an East-Meet West Centre for International Cultural Exchange. This SE tree mark signifies our status to the public, helps us fulfil our social responsibilities, and motivates us to continue to seek invaluable input from key stakeholders in order to achieve our goals. Input from stakeholders will make us a strong Change Agent, helping achieve our long-term goals and having a sustainable impact on Hong Kong society.

Art Viewing Education Programme - Content Development

We continue  to develop the Art Viewing Education Project 2023, and are delighted to welcome five art and poetry enthusiasts in contributing content for this project this month. The participatory engagement and support we have received for this project have deepened our belief in Arts as Civic Commons (ArtsC) and demonstrates that art brings people together for the greater good of society. We sincerely thank the poetry enthusiasts (i.e. Blake Kowk, Mavis Yueng, Jacqueline Song and Ophelia Wong, and Gabrielle Tse), who shared great ideas, contributed their lovely work, or are currently preparing work for the project.

Lastly, we would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the following support in making videos for this project: Hong Kong Memories (courtesy of The University of Chicago Booth School of Business in Hong Kong) and Altered States - Painting Myanmar (courtesy of SMU Libraries and Ian Holliday). We engaged a total of nine youths for the video making. We would like to spotlight the two youths from Kenya and Hong Kong who were guided by professional photographer and videographer Jayne Russell to make a video about Hong Kong Memories. Another group of young filmmakers made a video for the Luis Chan Flagship Exhibition (courtesy of the Hong Kong Arts Centre and Luis Trust). It was wonderful to learn that the youths were inspired and gained new perspectives on the art exhibitions that they made the videos for. This video making experience and related conversations with our founder and skill-based professionals encouraged the involved youths to rededicate themselves to their future academic and career pursuits and to embrace the challenges that arise on what are sure to be their rewarding life journey. Ultimately, we hope to motivate them with new insights through the art and cultural learning experience.
