Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - October 2022
Welcome to the October newsletter of Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I had opportunities to join events with Rethink Hong Kong 2022, Fine Art Asia 2022, A Night at Chamber of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and also started the first learning and sharing chapter of the Arts for Good Fellowship 2022 of Singapore International Foundation. I deeply feel the urgent need for Hong Kong to create a pillar of art and culture in education as part of our sustainability and social change agenda. I am eager to continue connecting with the ESG and community building teams in corporations and art and culture organisations, as well as education and youth development specialists and organisations, in order to work on multidisciplinary art and cultural education projects for our younger generations in Hong Kong.

Best regards,

Art Viewing Education Project 2023
- Video Making

One of our missions is to provide equal access to arts for younger generations in Hong Kong. We are delighted to launch our Art Viewing Education Project 2023, which aims to bring art viewing accessible for students (aged 10+) and tackle logistic restriction that has deprived them from learning and reflecting through art viewing.

With many exhibitions in town being recorded in digital format, we will be able to facilitate art viewing in a hybrid mode. We aim to create unique art viewing experiences by combining virtual art viewing with onsite setup, facilitation, storytelling, and poetry recitation. This project, like others, aims to foster unique perspectives, provoke deeper thinking, inspire boundless imagination, and enhance storytelling skills among students, particularly those from local education system in Hong Kong. We are hoping more schools and NGOs could accept our proposal.

We would like to send our special thanks to the young filmmakers Terry Tse and Evan Yip for their meaningful contributions this month. Meanwhile, we continue to seek videographers to help us with this ongoing project.

Chinese Calligraphy Education Project 2022

Many thanks to Integrated Brilliant Education and 15 corporate volunteers, we had another great learning session with 15 non-Chinese-speaking youths in Sham Shui Po. We are very grateful that our volunteers organised this event and continue to advocate for arts and culture and for Arts for Good with corporations and in their communities.

We would also like to thank calligraphist Katrina Mo, sound artist Alain Chui, as well as the young volunteers who made the Hong Kong Disappearing Signages Written in Chinese Calligraphy video that anchors this project.

We continue our outreach to the community through partnership with NGOs as part of our effort to support youths emotionally and intellectually through arts and cultural initiatives.

The Last Supper Podcast- Episode 32

We are delighted to share our social mission and Arts for Good with The Last Supper podcast produced and hosted by Oscar Venhuis and supported by the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association.

We invite our readers to listen to the 50 sec highlight of the podcast which explains Good of the Arts in Hong Kong. The full episode is also available via the Web, SPOTIFYAPPLE, and GOOGLE through the links below:

Featured Artist Series: #1 Sony Rai

We have officially launched our Featured Artist Series, an initiative designed to create and allocate more art making, exhibiting, and/or teaching opportunities and resources for artists in Hong Kong from under-resourced backgrounds.

We proudly introduce our first artist Sony Rai, a printmaking artist from Nepal who was referred to us by the SRACP's career and life development for Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong. Inspired by the current social climate and the idea of generational gaps, she is shining a light on the long-forgotten cultures and life innovations she has discovered through her creative jouney in Nepal and Hong Kong.

We deeply appreciate her dedication to art as a medium to foster common values for our society. We continue to support Sony as part of our commitment to highlighting diverse cultural perspectives in our society and promoting social inclusion through art and culture.

The East and The West - the Story of Rag Paper Making

We are super proud of the two students from Chinese International School (CIS) who explored the rag paper making with artists Elizabeth Briel and Benjamin Hao.

Charlotte Chen, from Year 5, took the lead by interviewing the artist to learn the process of rag paper making. She explored how the artist use stencilling techniques to create images. We were so impressed by how she used “how”, “why“ and “what if" questions and applied an experimental mindset and made predictions of her experiments in the process.

Evan Yip, from Year 12, leveraged his film making skills to document the interview. We are very thankful for Evan’s week-long commitment as part of his career-related enrichment learning at CIS.

We aimed to inspire students with the history of rag paper making, the different paper making cultures of Asia and Europe, and the human relationship with textile remnants. More importantly, we helped the students gain new perspectives on East and West cultures through this unique story of rag paper making.
