Welcome to the March 2024 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I am very honoured to be part of a meaningful heritage revitalisation and storytelling project for education and community service in Hong Kong. I am also excited to soon lead a team of students from different disciplines to integrate stories with technology and to foster belonging for youths at a tertiary institution. At the same time, we are also delighted to start a new creative chapter of our Story of Hong Kong, which highlights the cultural lenses and framings of ethnic minorities in the city. This chapter directly addresses social integration and inclusion of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. I am  eager to connect with likeminded partners including south eastern asian artists who are equally passionate, collaborative, and openminded for creative social impact projects through and with the arts, and to react to the current social issues in Hong Kong with us.

Thanks to the Jockey Club MEL Project, Arts for Good is glad to join the 2024 cohort host by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and continue to learn more about evaluation and impact assessment mechanism and to share experiences and insights with peer social impact entities. Since our establishment, we have been creating (and will continue to create) evidence-based cases and examples in schools, universities, institutions, NGOs, and with sustainability partners. All these cases allow us to collect observations and intuitive feedback from key stakeholders and frontline educators and professionals, which we think represent a very important and convincing portfolio to evaluate the impact of our approach at Arts for Good.

Vine Wall 2024

In the timeless dance of intertwining vines, where life finds possibilities, lies the essence of Vine Wall 2024. This artwork installed at the Kwun Tong Maryknoll College harnesses the metaphorical power of vines to inspire and uplift.

Symbolising resilience, vitality, and freedom, these vines embody the profound qualities of growth and transformation. Its climbing structure symbolizes the freedom to explore new heights. Like the actural vine wall which is firmly rooted with stability and nourishment, the Vine Wall 2024 anchored by the cooperative efforts of more than 240 boys from the school. The co-creating process incorporated multiple rounds of collaborative reframing and storytelling processes via three art mediums.

Vine Wall 2024 represents a vibrant community life which is interwoven with ancient wisdom, perspectives, colours, textures, shapes, and - most importantly - stories that reflect the imaginative lives of the boys. The project not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also serves as a catalyst for inspiration and empowerment for the young makers and young viewers at the school.

By engaging the students in the making and storytelling process and installing the large artwork in the main corridor in the school premises, Vine Wall 2024 will continue to inspire the young creators every time they walk past. It invites them to reflect upon the vibrant hues of life, the strength derived from their roots, and the transformative power of perseverance, growth and upward vitality. Together with the actual vine wall located at the centre of the school, it becomes a daily visual reminder of their own capacity for growth, imagination and the significance of embracing possibilities and challenges at the school and in life.

We are very proud of the creative curation, execution and the problem solving process during the entire project which has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students and the frontline teachers. On our journey forward, we are committed to continuing to create, to inspire, and to uplift more of our younger generations in Hong kong, regardless of their demographic backgrounds.
