Welcome to the April 2026 newsletter from the Arts for Good Foundation. Building on our previous reflections on the intangible qualities of talent development, we are delighted to collaborate with SAHK We will provide a minimum of 120 hours of meaningful work experience featuring hands-on guidance, peer learning, and creative engagement for two young talents with special educational needs.

With the support of our current university students, we'd also like to invite industry partners and individuals alike to join this initiative. Through meaningful partnerships, we can offer inspiring and potentially life-changing professional journeys for these young creative talents at the Arts for Good Foundation this May and June.

On a personal note, I am actively engaged in shaping the Arts for Good curriculum through a distinctive anthropological lens. Our work is grounded in our growing understanding that "making" is a fundamental expression of human identity, embedded within the individual, the community, and society at large. The act of making fosters a sense of ownership that connects to how we think, relate, and engage with the world.

Methodologically, we believe that fieldwork, ethnography, and participant observation - core practices in anthropology - combined with creative practices, are instrumental in cultivating originality of creativity and sharpening problem identification. These capacities develop through a situated understanding of environments and communities, and a human-centered sensibility honed through "living moment awareness" and "embodied learning with materials and tools". By redefining problems and contextualizing interpretations, learners transform raw skills and judgment into new meanings and innovative concepts. This process anchors young learners with a profound sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and resilience. Such intangible qualities are indispensable in a future marked by volatility and uncertainty, where technological advancement, societal shifts, and geopolitical conflicts impose unprecedented challenges on us all.

Kind Regards,

Short Film: Man Lee on Jervois Street
Behind Hong Kong Street Signs

As our "Cinematic Hong Kong Street Storytelling" project evolves, we are deepening our exploration of how Hong Kong’s iconic street signs bear witness to the city’s transformation. Created in collaboration with four young talents, our latest short film, "Man Lee on Jervois Street," marks a new chapter in our reflection on Hong Kong’s shifting civic landscape. We are also thrilled that artificial intelligence has now made it possible to transform the entire Behind Hong Kong Street Signs series into a new collection of compelling visuals and cinematic works.

Jervois Street was once a vital artery for the Suzhou and Hangzhou silk textile trade, an early manifestation of the synergy between Hangzhou craftsmanship and Hong Kong's commercial vitality. Today, that same corridor linking Hangzhou and Hong Kong reflects a new chapter in the city's unfolding narrative.

Man Lee, a master craftsman who has spent forty years of making local signages at the corner of Jervois Street, now operates next door to a Pin DuoDuo parcel pickup point. Here, the algorithmic efficiency of mainland e-commerce quietly overtakes the manual rhythm of hand-crafted making. Through our lens, the contrast between the two worlds becomes striking: Mr. Leung's life as a dedicated maker is set against a new business model defined by an endless flow of parcels awaiting collection. Facing the threat of closure, Mr. Leung’s decision to continue his craft in a smaller space on a neighboring street speaks to the enduring resilience of Hong Kong’s "making" heritage.

This creative process prompted our team to reflect on how shifting technology is reshaping Hong Kong’s social fabric. We ponder how convenience transforms the lives of many, while the act of making endures in the hands of a few. As historical layers fade and new commercial forms take root, we continue to ask: what space remains for "making" at the heart of Hong Kong? What essential values of "making" will the future generations inherit from these shifting street stories?

歡迎閱讀 Arts for Good Foundation 2026年4月簡訊。
