Arts for Good Foundation Newsletter - June 2024
Alike and Unlike 2021
co-created with Single Mothers and Their Children At The Hope of the City, Sham Shui Po
Welcome to the June 2024 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I was delighted to showcase Arts for Good Foundation, three of our community artworks, and two featured artists at Manulife’s Asia Regional Office in Hong Kong. This exhibition was part of their annual Global Afternoon of Reflection and Learning on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Arts for Good is dedicated to co-creating community artworks with corporations, institutions, schools and NGO partners and supporting young artists who uphold positive values for society and a more diverse and inclusive future of Hong Kong.

More importantly, we continue to seek opportunities to showcase our unique narratives for youth development, diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainable communities. At the same time, we advocate for ethical and respectful mindsets by highlighting meaningful artworks, immersive storytelling and thoughtful art making processes.

As the summer is approaching, we are launching a one-month creative period with 15 youths from four universities, including three research trainers coming to Hong Kong from the University of Chicago USA. Our next newsletter will be published at the end of August 2024.

In the meantime, we will continue to work on  meaningful creative projects, and we welcome new collaboration opportunities with our stakeholders. Please reach out to us via email. Meanwhile, we look forward to another productive autumn and wish everyone a fantastic summer!

Best regards,

Better City, Better Life: Along the River During Qingming Festival with Hong Kong City Walk

"Along the River During the Qingming Festival” (清明上河圖) stands as a quintessential piece of Chinese culture. This hand-roll painting captures the bustling city of Bianjing during the Song Dynasty through scatter perspective mapping, showcasing diverse landscapes and a multitude of characters engaged in various activities. Each figure is distinctively dressed, contributing to a vibrant tapestry that reflects the city’s lively arts, literature, and individual pursuits within its unique social, political, and economic milieu. More than just a snapshot of civic life, this scattered perspective offers insightful glimpses into the broader and deeper narratives of its nation—where minute details reveal significant trends and transformations that were taking place at the time.

Initiated and led by both of the directors of the Arts for Good Foundation, this innovative project seeks to draw parallel perspectives between “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” and contemporary Hong Kong society. It strives to deepen the connection between classical Chinese culture and Hong Kong’s unique narrative, especially through the fresh viewpoints of young people in Hong Kong. The project engages young people in reinterpreting the intricate details of daily life as reflections of broader societal trends and ongoing transformations in Hong Kong, in the process decoding nuances that point as to wider societal patterns and shifts currently underway in Hong Kong. Our ambition is to inspire historical awareness and perspective among the youth, encouraging them to observe and connect with the subtle yet significant shifts shaping Hong Kong’s present and future, while drawing intellectual and emotional parallels with this timeless masterpiece.

Arts for Good Foundation 2024
