Arts for Good Foundation Newsletter - February 2024
Newsletter Banner Designer: Hau She Chai, HKU student in architecture
Welcome to the February 2024 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I had the honour of attending the launch ceremony for the Policy Lab for Hong Kong Talent Development of the City University of Hong Kong and to participate in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit 2024 organised by the SCMP Live. I highly value these connections with our key stakeholders. I am also immensely grateful as the opportunities like these allow me to advocate for the importance of community-based education and engagement through arts. These are also opportunities to explain how Arts for Good's unique social impact offerings have the potential to foster social inclusiveness for foreign talents and their families, while also ensuring local young people in Hong Kong, regardless of their demographic backgrounds, to be equally and culturally prepared to contribute to an increasingly diverse and inclusive future when Hong Kong establishes itself as a Global Talent Hub.

At the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, I had the opportunity to summarise and share the key features of our social impact offerings as well as our roadmap to our key stakeholders (presentation deck). Our approach is deeply grounded in positive values, and we engage young people in exploring history, context, and a multiplicity of perspectives. Through our "Story of Hong Kong," we celebrate the diversity of life experiences and cultural differences, reinterpreting their deeper meanings for the betterment of Hong Kong's future. We tell stories that resonate emotionally and sentimentally with young people, advocating collective effort while embracing individual authenticity. We strongly believe that the power of collaboration can bring about a sustainable future for Hong Kong.

Best regards,

Arts Integrated Project: Vine Wall 2024

We are delighted to launch a new school project, "Vine Wall 2024," specifically tailored in a bilingual setting at Kwun Tong Maryknoll College. Over the course of ten days, we will engage a total of 240 students (aged 14-15) in a collaborative process to co-create their own story of a vine wall with the mediums of Chinese ink painting, collage, and textile installation.

This project draws inspiration from the beautiful vine wall located at the center of their campus. We have curated four chapters in the creative process: "Love," "Serving Others," "Perseverance," and "the Vitality of Happiness in Life", each of which begins with a story of a Chinese ancient poet. We guide the students to appreciate the poets' life journeys, encouraging observation, deeper thinking and imagination, and facilitating creative and collaborative work. In addition, we reflect on the lives of the poets and how they relate to young people's life journey. The project will recreate fragments of the students' lives on the campus, which is surrounded by the beautiful and meditative vine wall. The whole school community would have a chance to experience the collaborative artwork.

We will also document the emotional journey and evaluate the feedback from the students, and share the impact and our reflection in our March newsletter.

A Brew of Time: The Milk Tea Making Legacy Visual Novel Project Shortlisted in RSLEIHE 2023

We are delighted that the "A Brew of Time: The Milk Tea Making Legacy Visual Novel" project, delivered in collaboration with the Language Center of Hong Kong Baptist University, has been shortlisted as part of the "Redesigning Student Learning Experience in Higher Education (RSLEIHE) Symposium 2023". We would like to take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to the student team and express our gratitude to their advisor, Dr. Simon Wang. We are also deeply grateful for the support and resources extended to help showcase the project to the public in 2023, and for its coming publication on the RSLEIHE platform in 2024.

Arts for Good is a strong advocate of project-based learning and experiential learning through and with the arts. We firmly believe that arts is a powerful synthesis and also a creative synthesiser for value education, concept-based learning, interdisciplinary learning and service learning. We are strongly committed to integrating arts in various learning experiences and community service. We inspire students to connect their learning with community and society. In the process, we help them seek deeper meanings in personal growth and contribute to the greater common good for Hong Kong and the world. In each of the project, we also foster diverse perspectives through creative and collaborative processes in support for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

Last but not least, we are optimistic about our journey ahead, which we face with hope, positivity, and energy. We would also like to extend our heartfelt wishes for everyone for a fruitful, prosperous, and joyous Year of the Dragon.

Arts for Good Foundation 20024
