Newsletter from Arts for Good Foundation - May 2023

Welcome to the May 2023 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, we are proud to highlight meaningful projects we have completed and launch an exciting new pilot project in collaboration with a local school. These projects showcase our commitment to being a pioneering social enterprise in the areas of sustainability and the arts, leveraging a horizontal, collective approach to explore innovative ways to be a strong agent of change. We believe that the creative process itself can be a vehicle for change, celebrating diversity and inclusion through and with the arts. We continue to work with strong collaborators who share a common goal of heading towards a more sustainable and inclusive future in Hong Kong.

Best regards,
Change Maker,
Founder & Director

Intergeneration Inclusion Through Sound Art (Pilot)

We are delighted that the Church of Christ in China (CCC) Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School in Tun Mun signed on as the pilot partner for the existing pipeline project entitiled Cross-generation Inclusion through Sound Art.

This project aims to bridge the gap in cross-generation communication and encourage the sharing of stories through the medium of sound, with focuses on the historical perspective of our society, and the changing nature of our surrounding neighbourhoods and communities. We helped both youths and elderly participants to embark on a journey of discovering sounds in their communities and sharing their stories through verbal, writing or visual expressions.  We strongly believe that the experience of sharing in-depth stories across generations is an important way to enhance the quality of intergenerational communication,  understanding, and inclusion.

Art in MTR Video Project

We are delighted to have completed seven stories and one highlight trailer for the Arts in MTR project. We are proud of the creative work done by over 30 participating university students and grateful for the support we received to realise their visions in the creative storytelling process. The young participants collaborated to document art at seven MTR stations and to trace connections between the Art in MTR and surrounding neighbourhoods or themselves. We will later announce the sharing platforms for the videos.

We are grateful for the opportunity that MTR has provided to university students to bring their creative vision to life. We are actively seeking future opportunities to collaborate with corporations, schools, NGOs, and institutions across the private and public sectors. Together we can achieve our shared goal of a more sustainable and inclusive future through and with the arts.

"Story of Hong Kong" Series: Body Diversity and Inclusion

We are delighted to present two short documentaries that we created with eight Year 11 students from the Chinese International School (CIS) and was showcased to over 200 students in the school. The stories share two different perspectives on how  Rabi Yim, who uses wheelchairs, thrives in Hong Kong. By portraying how Rabi embodies resilience, beauty and hope despite the barrier she has overcome every day, we inspired the participants and viewers to reframe obstacle as opportunities for persistence and ingenuity. We are proud to continue raising awareness of body diversity and inclusion, and to help participating students appreciate the importance of engaging with individual and community in an ethical and respectful manner, in the process, exercising empathy for people with different needs. Through the Story of Hong Kong series, we aim to inspire youth people to incorporate positive and human-centered initiatives in their future academic and professional endeavours.

We are also extremely proud of the four students from The University of Hong Kong who made a 10-minute documentary about Christy Cheung. Their documentary has been showcased within the HKU community and beyond at Tai Kwun this month.

We are dedicated to continuing to bring enriching stories to life via our Story of Hong Kong series, engaging youths to create meaningful and comprehensive educational contents and materials about diversity and inclusion, and ultimately inspiring change making throughout the entire process.

38 Poets Registered

One of Arts for Good's long-term projects is to utilise the power of poetry to enhance art viewing and develop art viewing materials. In pursuit of this goal, we are recruiting and connecting with poets from the community to advocate for art through their personal poetic expressions.

Our objective in doing so is to encourage collective action to advocate for art and to make a sustainable impact through collective efforts while at the same time respecting each individual's expression and space to interpret art. This horizontal and collective approach will contribute to our long-term goal of fostering diverse perspectives in younger generations, nurturing great storytellers and culture learners, and fostering respectful and ethnical mindset towards individual differences. Ultimately we believe these efforts will lead to a positive drive for change.
