Cinematic Stories: Behind Hong Kong Street Signs
Chinese International School
Art Week 2025
We are thrilled to maintain our 5th year of partnering with the Chinese International School (CIS) for their Art Week, offering a unique learning experience under the International Baccalaureate (IB) film making programme. In today's complex world, we strongly resonate with CIS's vision of fostering life-long learners at the confluence of East and West. These generations of learners will discover new paths, build bridges, foster connections and flourish on individual's life paths. We are dedicated to collaborating with and learning from CIS and all the collaborating higher institutions to continually enhance our learning processes and creative pursuits. Our ultimate goal aims to positively impact on a wider spectrum of youth from the diverse communities in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong’s street signs, with their distinctive bilingual typography and cultural charm, transcend their role as mere navigational tools—they serve as vibrant storytellers of the city's rich history and cultural identities. Nestled amidst the skyscrapers and bustling markets, these bilingual signs embody a unique blend of East and West influence, reflecting Hong Kong’s colonial past and its dynamic present. They are an iconic visual lexicon that has become synonymous with the city’s unique culture. Beyond aesthetics, these signs symbolize Hong Kong’s resilience, transformation and adaptability that have often been overlooked.
In this project, we will lead a group of young individuals from CIS to document the street signs on Hong Kong Island, and craft compelling narratives that revolve around these cultural landmarks. Through digital storytelling and filmmaking, we aim to help them forge deeper personal connections with Hong Kong's vibrant cultural signs. This project will enable them to construct the thought-provoking narratives that bridge the past and future of our city through their unique reinterpretation and retelling of the street signs.
