Welcome to the May 2025 newsletter of the Arts for Good Foundation. This month, I was deeply inspired by the keynote address on "Friend or Enemy of Humanity? AI Technology in Controversy" which explores the technology from the social and governance perspective and focuses on future sustainability. The talk was presented by Professor Meng Tianguang, Associate Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Tsinghua University, and Dr. Hubert Etienne, President of Quintessence AI, at the S+ Summit and Expo organized by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service. The speeches highlighted the essential future skills for human-to-human and human-to-machine interaction. Key among these were the abilities to build trust and to maintain an ethical and respectful mindset when society adapts and changes in response to the emerging AI era. Equally important are educational approaches that foster open-minded curiosity, stimulate boundless imagination and creativity and encourage young people to explore their personal interests and discover what it is in life that sparks strong self-conviction and depth of characters. These efforts align deeply with the Arts for Good Foundation's goal of having a sustainable impact on Hong Kong's education landscape through and with the arts.
As for our recent practical endeavours, I am profoundly touched by the Happiness Showcase featuring 24 student teams from the Visual Communication program at the School of English, University of Hong Kong. As the supervisor for five of these teams, I was amazed by the creativity and dedication they displayed. The array of projects spanned diverse media, with many students utilising AI software to help bring their concepts to life. More impressively, the works they produced explore deeper meanings of happiness that tied with social purposes, emotional and social values and connections, holistic well-being, and sustainability. At the same time, they delivered their artistic interpretations of their personal narratives and highlighted their learning journeys. All the efforts and outcomes truly exemplified the success and dedication of these young individuals who demonstrated their astonishing technical skill and deep engagement with the complexities of human experiences.
The students brimmed with creativity, vitality and energy, using AI technology masterfully, and produced works that speaks in a profound human way with human leadership. Their work continues to inspire us with new frontier learning in creativity, communication, and use of AI within project-based learning settings in Education to achieve social good.
